Altnabreac Solar Power Station
Designed, built and commissioned an off-grid solar power station supplying a remote, unmanned railway station on Scotland's Far North Line, keeping trackside systems powered with no mains connection.
Electrical Engineer & Renewables Specialist
// Off-grid power · Solar PV · Surveillance systems
Twenty-five years designing, building and commissioning renewable and off-grid power systems in the world's most remote, challenging and hazardous environments. From oil fields in Kazakhstan to unmanned railway stations, I keep critical infrastructure running where the grid does not reach.
01 — Profile
For more than 25 years I have worked as an electrician and electrical engineer. For the last 15 of them I have specialised in the design and development of surveillance, communications and power systems, with a deep focus on renewable technology and genuinely sustainable solutions.
I have designed celebrated solar, wind and biomass innovations, delivered award-winning security and fire projects, and been part of successful initiatives around the world. What drives me is simple: a passion for working with good people to solve big problems in the best possible way, within the timeline and budget we have been given.
Whether the stakeholder is a customer, colleague, manager, supplier or regulator, I lead from the front. My job is to make sure everyone around me has a safe, productive and collaborative environment, where knowledge is shared, debate is encouraged, and mistakes become lessons in the name of continuous improvement.
I am now looking for a senior or managerial engineering role with an eco-conscious organisation that needs an innovative, people-focused collaborator designing and delivering effective, elegant engineering solutions.

04 — Experience
Managed the manufacturing department, overseeing the warehouse assembly area and mechanical fitters, with final responsibility for design, build and operation. Researched and developed new products and ran the organisation's technical processes end to end. Delivered live onsite training and commissioning support to major international clients including Highways England, Chevron Oil and Balfour Beatty, and travelled to international oil fields to commission and deploy 60 solar surveillance units.
Grew the team through a period of success and moved the business into the renewables sector with the LEC Renewables subsidiary. Delivered solar installations including signage systems at the Channel Tunnel and an 80kW solar farm. Drove diversification from solar into mechanical, heat pumps, small-scale wind and biomass, working with Herz and Windhager, and commissioned renewable systems up to 120kW.
Started as a self-employed electrician and then formed a company serving domestic and commercial clients, building the reputation and relationships that later carried the business into renewables.
Various roles across sales, machining and logistics, developing hands-on trade knowledge and an early feel for how sites and supply chains fit together.
Co-ordinated export facilities for road freight across Europe and international container shipping to Canada and the Far East.
Ran QA and warehouse management for a large fruit processor, and qualified as a TWI (trained work instructor).
